How to Pick the Right Domain Name for Your Website

Having the right domain name can make or break the traffic that visits your website. If it is too long and not catchy no one will remember it. If the spelling is too complex people won't remember it either. And if people don't remember your domain name then that drastically reduces the likelihood of them finding your website. And that kind of defeats the purpose of having a website, right?

What's A Domain Name?

Oh, what is a domain name? It is the address of your website on the internet. They used to follow the "www." prefix but it is no longer used as much. Now do you understand why your domain name is SO important and why having the wrong domain name can be detrimental to your business and its website?

Bad Naming Examples

Imagine if YouTube's domain name was spelled "" or "". What if was spelled as simply as How many times would you misspell them? Or what if your name was Taylor and your business was selling flowers. Let's say that you decided to make your domain name Taylorstore. com? That name is good for sharing your business name but its' not greet for sales, which is what you ultimately want, right? But no one would know that your business is selling flowers by looking at your domain name. As a rule of thumb, your domain name should usually describe what you do or what you're selling.

More Than Just A Domain Name

Your domain name is not only how people find you on the internet but it becomes part of your brand. Your brand, the way your business is recognized by the world and prospective customers/clients, is a precious commodity that must be unique and remembered. Your domain name is so important that it should be considered when naming your business. Yes, I believe that your website should be considered as part of your initial business planning. Having a website is THAT important to the success of your business! Every single service or product that I have ever been a part of had a website. Some of them were very simple but I always had one because I understood their importance in the marketplace.

Website Hosting

Choosing a hosting company for your domain name/website is very important and is something that you should think about thoroughly. A hosting company is who you purchase your domain name through and they house your website files. Some of the most popular hosting companies are GoDaddy and Hostgator. They are great examples of how consistent marketing and advertising can grow your business despite having a domain name that does not tell what your business is about. Most entrepreneurs and small businesses do not have the resources for that type of campaign. I have been using as my hosting company for over 15 years now. I trust them with my websites and all of my client sites. I have developed a great relationship with them and I would recommend them to everyone.
