Do Not Make This Social Media Marketing Mistake

Most of us entrepreneurs quickly learn the benefits of leveraging social media to advertise and market our products, services and brands. We see the benefits of each of the three major social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, with LinkedIn, Pinterest and Instagram quickly growing in popularity.

Our natural instincts tell us to expose our business to as many people as possible. And what better way to do that than to use as many social media platforms as possible, right? WRONG! That is a viable option for those who are very familiar with each platform and who have the resources to pull it off correctly. But for most people, who are just starting out and small businesses, this is a bad idea for the following reasons.

  1. It takes a lot of time to tailor your content for each platform. They are each different for a reason and your content should be created to take advantage of those differences. Doing this maximizes your views.
  2. It's much better to be a master of one than a user of many. Master one platform at a time. Invest in learning as much as you can to build your audience and to become a rock-star at getting replies and comments from your posts. Next you should access your resources and use that to determine if branching out to another platform would be in your best interest at that time.
  3. You could get good at growing your followers on all of the platforms but then you have to maintain them and they're seperate interests. Focus on one platform, grow your audience, then move them to the next platform.

Take Action

What now? Find the platform that you can relate to the most. Twitter is the easiest and you can build a lot of followers, quickly, but it can be difficult to build your target audience. Facebook is easier to build a targeted audience but it demands the most time to keep them and to build a relationship with them. YouTube is my favorite. It takes the most time, upfront, to create the content but video gets viewed the most and it will keep getting views, followers and customers long after you've created the videos.

Expert Tip: Take the time to research which platform is most consumed by your target audience and master that one. Delivering your content, product or service to your target audience is the point of using social media platforms in the first place, right?
